Five ways that Tennessee drivers can help prevent crashes

There are any number of ways that drivers can help prevent crashes. Road safety is becoming more crucial as the number of car crash fatalities continues to hover around 40,000. One should not forget the millions who are injured, too. In 2018, for example, 4.5 million people in the U.S. were injured in auto accidents, which is about one person every seven seconds.

Truck driver fatigue is on the rise

Tennessee residents might be interested to learn that researchers from Ball State University analyzed more than 150,000 working adults across the U.S. to determine what professions were most prone to sleep deprivation. Overall, 35.6% of respondents said they suffered from inadequate sleep in 2018. Back in 2010, the percentage was 30.9%.

Sleep deprivation high among commercial truckers

Commercial truckers in Tennessee can work long hours, sometimes getting less than the recommended seven hours of sleep as a result. Truckers are not the only workers who are experiencing a chronic lack of sleep, though. A study from Ball State University surveyed more than 150,000 working adults in the U.S. and discovered which professions run the highest risk for sleep deprivation.

Drunk driving facts

Drunk driving is still alarmingly common in Tennessee and across the United States according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency reports that nearly 30 people are killed in alcohol-related traffic accidents on U.S. roads each day. In 2017, 10,874 Americans died in drunk-driving wrecks, which averages to one death every 48 minutes.

FMCSA moves to relax hours of service regulations

Truck drivers in Tennessee and around the country could work shifts as long as 17 hours if recently proposed revisions to federal hours of service regulations are implemented. The current rules limit truck driver shifts to 14 hours. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says the revisions will make the nation's roads safer, but several advocacy groups including Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety and the Truck Safety Coalition oppose them.

Drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving

Few Tennessee drivers would think of getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, but the results of a recent American Automobile Association survey suggest that about one in three of people have driven while dangerously fatigued within the last month. Going without sleep for 24 hours impairs a driver as much as five shots of whisky, yet study after study shows that motorists are willing to take this risk even when they are aware of it.

Tennessee trucker convicted in impaired driving crash that killed two

If you drive northeast of Cleveland on Interstate 75 for about an hour and a half, you will arrive in Knox County. That is where a jury recently found a Tennessee trucker guilty of manslaughter in a violent truck accident that killed two people in 2016.

Tennessee minivan crashes into oncoming car

Many Tennessee residents had travel plans over the recent Memorial Day weekend. Perhaps the travel was just to get together with friends or family. Others may have had out-of-state destinations. Either way, the state's roads and highways saw a fair amount of vehicular traffic over the holiday weekend. Unfortunately, the holiday weekend was not free of motor vehicle accidents.
