Was a defective product hiding in your grocery cart?

Going grocery shopping does not exactly top the list of most desirable chores, but it is a necessary part of life. This sometimes stressful experience might be even more difficult considering that it is possible to purchase tainted or dangerous food products. Even though people in Tennessee generally associate the term "defective product" with non-food items, it can also apply to items purchased at grocery stores.

A recent food recall highlights just how serious tainted food products can be. Mann Packaging Co. issued a voluntary for upwards of 100 different vegetable products. The affected products were all packaged by Mann, but sold by a number of different brands, including Trader Joe's, Del Monte, O Organics, Signature Farms and several more.

The recall is in response to a warning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which notified Mann Packaging that its vegetable products were likely tainted with listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis. Healthy people suffering from listeriosis often experience headaches, fevers, nausea, abdominal pain, stiffness and other symptoms. Vulnerable populations can even die, including adults older than 65, pregnant women, newborns and those living with weakened immune systems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1,600 people contract listeriosis every year, 260 of whom die.

Tennessee shoppers should be able to buy groceries and other consumer products with confidence. Big companies do not always prioritize consumer safety though, which means that making a seemingly simple choice -- such as buying a package of vegetables -- could be extremely dangerous. The aftermath of using or eating a defective product can also be severe. Seeking compensation for things like pain and suffering or medical bills is often an effective choice for victims who are struggling to recover.
