Wrongful death: Alleged drunk driver charged in fatal wreck

Tennessee police believe that the driver who caused a recent fatal accident was intoxicated at the time of the wreck. He is facing a number of criminal charges, including vehicular homicide and DUI. However, for the families of those who have died in drunk driving accidents, criminal charges may not feel like sufficient justice for their loved ones. Some find that also pursuing wrongful death lawsuits can be helpful for processing grief.

Prior to the wreck, a witness said that he spotted the 25-year-old man traveling past him or her at upwards of 100 mph. At some point, the driver hit another vehicle, forcing it into a guard rail. The driver of the other vehicle -- a 24-year-old man -- was ejected from his vehicle and died.

The witness who first saw the speeding driver also stopped at the accident scene. At that time, the alleged drunk driver asked the witness for a ride. However, he then quickly drove off, and the witness called 911. Police eventually caught up with the driver, who admitted to drinking before getting behind the wheel. He also told police that he had crashed into a wall, so it is not clear if he even realized that he had hit another vehicle.

It is never easy to lose a family member, but it can be especially difficult when a death is preventable. Tennessee families who have lost loved ones because of reckless, negligent or even drunk drivers may want to consider whether wrongful death lawsuits might be helpful for their situations. When a family successfully pursues such a claim to completion, they can recover important compensation for funeral costs, lost income and more.
