Tennessee still has too many distracted driving accidents

Most drivers know just how dangerous it is to text while driving, but many people continue to use smartphones while behind the wheel anyway. A new state law aimed at reducing distracted driving rates went into effect on July 1, 2019. Despite this action, it does not appear as if there has been any significant reduction in distracted driving accidents.

The number of distracted driving deaths in Tennessee is almost five times higher than the national average. A new hands-free law makes it illegal for a driver to hold a smartphone or any mobile device with not just his or her hands, but any other part of the body. Writing, sending or reading text-based communications is now illegal too, as is recording, broadcasting or watching anything on a mobile device while driving. The new law is aimed at reducing traffic fatalities.

In 2018, distracted drivers contributed to approximately 24,600 accidents. That year 1,041 people died on Tennessee roads, with 680 of those deaths falling between January and August. As of September in this year, 752 people have already died in car wrecks. According to state troopers, distracted driving is still a serious problem, and it is killing people.

Distracted driving accidents tend to be severe since drivers may be too busy looking at their phones to slow down or apply the brakes. Because of this, distracted driving fatalities are sadly not that uncommon. In these situations, surviving family members may choose to pursue claims for monetary damages on behalf of their loved ones. This is often accomplished by successfully pursuing wrongful death lawsuits.
